  • You wish you belonged to a book club.

  • You just love to read, all on your own, especially the classics, from the ancient to the up-and-coming.

  • You just love to read, and you want to tackle some books that are maybe a little bit intimidating.

  • You just love to read. Period.

If you’re any of the above, Better Book Clubs is for you!

It’s useful, it’s fun, and it’s free!

Every Sunday, I’ll post a note on what I’m reading and ask you to share what you’re reading, too. This is a great way to connect with other book clubs and readers, think about books you may not have considered, and share some reading love.

Every Wednesday, I’ll post a feature on a topic of interest and use to book clubs and readers. These will include tips for making your book club better; advice for reading challenging books; author interviews; a peek behind the publishing curtain; literary photo essays; book-and-movie pairing critiques—and other surprises!

I’ll often include my own unique photos, not stock stuff. This one was taken at the Institute Library in New Haven, where you climb a set of narrow, creaky, rubber-treaded stairs and step through a time warp into the 19th century. Founded in 1826, the library has been at its Chapel Street location since the 1870s.

What makes me more helpful than the next person when it comes to book clubs?

I’m a published author and a teacher of writing and literature. I understand writing and reading from both sides—the creation and the consumption.

My debut novel, A Violet Season, was named one of the Best Books of 2012 by Kirkus Reviews, and my short fiction and non-fiction has been published in literary journals, magazines, and elsewhere. Most recently, I wrote more than 500 feature stories for the online magazine Daily Nutmeg in New Haven, CT.

I taught English at a public high school in Colorado for 5 years and writing at Quinnipiac University for 18 years.

But most important for Better Book Clubs: I visited more than two dozen book clubs when my novel came out. It was a blast! It was also a chance to hear their questions, observe their struggles, and realize I could help them.

I’m the author of a novel, stories, essays and 500+ features for DailyNutmeg.com. My greatest honor was an NEA fellowship. I’ve taught high school & college English, and I work now in land protection for Save the Sound. I love books. Obviously.
