I'm with you on the joys of field guides. I love my Sibley's and Peterson's guides to eastern birds!

The Beinecke has the original Audubon books on display. They are enormous, nearly five feet tall. Rapture!

This Bird a Day freebie just popped up on my FB feed. Virtual birdwatching, with birdsong audio. Great way to start the day for me, along with free Poem a Day. https://www.onebirdaday.com/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=one-bird-a-day&referred_by=61fcdf78-e986-555e-8ca0-535d021a0748&utm_campaign=US+-+Leads+%28ABO%29+-+One+Bird+A+Day+-+New+Page+-+LVL1

A bit off-topic, but much of what's said goes for "wandering the stacks" in an open library - some of my most memorable "sightings" have been not the book I sought those books a few spines away.

Funny, I was thinking of using that metaphor--that it's like the difference between reading online and browsing through a physical bookstore. No comparison.

Peterson's Guide to the Eastern Birds is our go to!! Our copy is gently C-shaped, due to being carried in back pockets (and sat on) over many years. Also with scribbles in the edges about rare bird sightings (when and where) which bring back a host of recollections when flipping through the pages. Though the iPhone app is a lot of fun, it doesn't have that ability to rekindle those memories, at least for me.

I love that point about writing in the margins--and it becomes a beloved artifact. So true!
