An enjoyable article which I accepted as a pat on the back for my having recently picked up an anthology of short stories written primarily in the 1930s + 1940s (some later) containing many gems. The book is 'Read With Me' ~ compiled by Thos. B. Costain
Since mid-November, I've been participating in a discussion group where we have been reading our way through the 2024 BASS, one story per week. Laurie Colwin's Evensong has been my favorite story so far, and I'm interested to read your thoughts about it. I have not been a big short story reader in the past, but being part of this group may have changed that.
Thank you also for your words about purchasing books from indies or Bookshop. My 2024 BASS was purchased at my local indie, Third Place Books, just five minutes from my house, but also existing in the shadow—both figuratively and geographically—of the giant retailer you alluded to. I want to make sure that my indie continues to thrive, so the aforementioned retailer will never get my business.
I'm really looking forward to your upcoming short story posts!
I love your soapbox about buying from indies-- totally with you!!

Thanks for the recommendation! Nothing like a good, old-fashioned short story.

Oh, wow, what a great coincidence! Looking forward to hearing your take on Colwin's story next week--and others throughout the month!
I just finished reading the 2022 BASS, I'll get my hands on an indie copy for 2024!
Oh my gosh, I am actually so many years behind myself!
